A man presented with a rash that appeared one to two days after he used a hot tub. He developed chills and a fever of 102°F (39°C) the day after the rash appeared. The rash continued to spread and the fever persisted even though he had been taking oral trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for two days. Physical examination revealed four or five superficial, tender, isolated, painful, erythematous nodules in bilateral axilla that were f luctuant and 0.5 to 1 cm in size (Figure 1). Incision and drainage produced a small amount of thick, purulent exudate from each nodule. The erythematous nodules on his abdomen were 1 to 3 mm in size and were not fluctuant. There was a pustule with surrounding erythema on his right calf.

Hot tub use during pregnancy and the risk of miscarriage.
To examine whether hot tub or whirlpool bath use during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, the authors conducted a 1996-1998 population-based prospective cohort study at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Oakland, California. Of 2729 eligible women, 1063 completed the interview. Miscarriage before 20 weeks of gestation was ascertained for all participants. Information on ho...
متن کاملHypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis in a hot tub, as proven by IS1245 RFLP and rep-PCR typing.
A symptomatic patient had repeatedly positive cultures of Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis after exposure to a hot tub contaminated with M. avium subsp. hominissuis. The pulmonary and tub water isolates were indistinguishable by IS1245 RFLP as well as rep-PCR typing. Discontinued use of the hot tub resulted in culture conversion.

To the Editor: I read with interest the report by Mangione et al. regarding Mycobacterium avium infection in a Colorado family who used an inadequately sanitized hot tub (1). The authors noted that the source of the M. avium complex was not clear, although the reservoir did appear to have been the hot tub. Twenty years ago, I helped treat a patient with a local infection caused by M. fortuitum ...
متن کاملPneumonitis due to Mycobacterium avium complex in hot tub water: infection or hypersensitivity?
We read with interest the paper by Embil et al (March 1997)1 because their first case resembled a patient we recently described in CHEST (January 1997).2 In our case, there was no doubt that we were dealing with an infection acquired from a hot tub. The patient's condition deteriorated despite discontinuation of the use of the hot tub, and dramatically improved after appropriate antimycobacteri...
متن کاملHot Tub Lung: A Diagnostic Challenge
Hot tub lung (HTL) is a granulomatous lung disease thought to occur as a result of a hypersensitivity response to non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Typical radiographic findings are diffuse micronodular and/or ground glass opacities. We report an interesting case of HTL that presented with unique radiographic features, making its diagnosis a predicament. A 56-year-old immunocompetent female w...
